Honduras Part 3

So sorry it has been so long since I've posted anything!! It's been hectic and crazy busy. But I want to share these pictures with you so badly -- I want to try to share what I experienced and what I learned. It'll be hard, but hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves and I can help fill in with thoughts as needed. So here it goes!

As I mentioned in the last post, we spent the first week of our 2 week trip up in the mountains just outside of the city of Catacamas. This is where we did our rural work in the clinics and schools.

This was our first day going out! We were headed to the first clinic and school (we were split up into 2 groups that went with the 2 nursing instructors that went on the trip). It's like when we are in the U.S., we need to have a nursing instructor at our clinical site so that we can get credit for our clinical hours (a requirement of all accredited nursing schools). So anyway, it was great because we were truly learning a lot of medical information and nursing skills and at the same time we were serving the people in the name of the Lord; it was amazing :)

We were taking a tour of the soon-to-be clinic. It looks like it will be really nice; the translators and locals from Predisan said it will be the nicest clinic of all the Predisan clinics once it is finished!

Our transportation :)

Our bathroom facilities..... believe it or not, I've used worse. This really wasn't that bad!

Ready to start seeing patients in the clinic.

Ha we were at the end of our lunch break and Bethany pulled out her stethoscope to listen to Andrea's heart. It's what we do when we're bored... ;)

Beautiful scenery all around us!!

Some cute dogs almost everywhere we went, too! These ones were very unique. Very malnourished, though, like most of the dogs there :(

It was very hot and quite humid, as you can tell by looking at the dogs!

Teaching some lessons to the kids at the local school!

Shawna Hood (one of the nursing instructors) helping a cute little boy with his bracelet (a reminder of the devo story of Joseph and how he respected and forgave his brothers).

The car rides got scary at times.... haha one was fake and one was actually very candid and real.

Sweet little girl, Anayi (spelling?), that was the daughter of one of the people who helped keep us in the mountains. We stayed at their place where there was a large barn-like structure that had a ton of rooms with bunk beds in them.

This is day 2 in the mountains and we are getting ready to teach some more lessons to the kids!

This is fluoride time. It's not in their water so they have to do treatments.

He was so cute with his glasses! He seemed very shy but oh so sweet.

The girl on the left was so cute and sweet! She was also crying shortly after this when they made her take the fluoride! Haha the kids didn't like it very much but I can't imagine it tasted very good.

It got quite messy haha

After fluoride time, we saw the children in order of their ages. Each child had a chart and we did a head-to-toe assessment on each one of them. It was great practice and we found a lot of children who had parasites and who were anemic.

We also checked for lice, as Leslie is doing here on the little girl. Not everyone had it (in fact very few did), but they treated them all anyway (not a bad idea!).

Shawna is testing this boy's vision with a handheld Snellen chart.

So as you can see, we got a lot of practice doing head-to-toe assessments and teaching our lessons!

I enjoyed this next set of pics! I like seeing where you were, what the facilities were like, etc. I just saw a pic from the Predisan page on fb & think I saw you in the pic.
